"Spring is far more than just a changing of seasons; it's a rebirth of the spirit." —Toni Sorenson

In Ayurveda, spring is governed by kapha dosha, which has the properties of 'cold', 'liquid', 'heavy', and 'sticky'. Think congestion, running nose, excess mucus, lethargy, spring inertia, a dull and heavy head.

To align with the energy of the season, Ayurveda describes ways and offers remedies to counteract such inconveniences and promote vitality through diet, lifestyle, and cleansing practices.

1. Diet

In spring, the focus should be on foods that are warming, light, and detoxifying. Choose seasonal fruits and vegetables such as fresh berries, asparagus, spinach, kale, and radishes. Spices like ginger, cumin, turmeric, and black pepper help stimulate digestion and clear excess mucus.

Avoid heavy, oily foods, excessive dairy, and rich meats.

2. Gentle Detox

Incorporating triphala, an Ayurvedic blend of three fruits, can help gently eliminate toxins and balance digestion. Dry brushing with a natural bristle brush before a bath stimulates the lymphatic system and promotes the release of toxins.

3. Seasonal Cleansing

According to Ayurveda aligning ourselves with the dominant seasonal qualities is essential for achieving sustained optimal health.

Right now we have one foot in the winter and one foot in the spring. It is likely that our habits are not yet taking into account the need to shift our food intake and our lifestyle habits to be more seasonally appropriate.

Our digestion is more active in the winter when the body needs more fuel. But as the days become longer and brighter, our digestive fire will naturally become weaker. The heavier and heartier meals that served us well during the cold months start to feel like a stone in the stomach. With the change in metabolism, the body is no longer able to process new inputs and leftover winter heaviness optimally. This can result in a build-up of metabolic residues and waste material which then can disrupt inner balance and cause tiredness, lack of drive, discomfort, and weight problems.

The Ayurvedic Cleanse is a holistic, rejuvenating process designed and proven to attune the body, mind, and spirit to the change of seasons.

4. Get Active in Spring

Last but not least, regular physical activities outdoors will have a tremendous positive impact on our well-being. If you feel sleepy during the day, Ayurveda recommends a half-hour brisk walk in the open air, rather than a midday sleep or another cup of coffee.

I hope some of these suggestions inspire you and help to add a ‘spring’ to your step.

Love, Oana.
